Deep TMS for PTSD Symptoms

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related symptoms are amongst the most common mental health conditions in Canada.

Many of our clients have previously tried multiple treatments including cognitive behavioural therapy, talk therapy, and medications without the desired benefit or with undesired side effects (e.g. emotional dulling, weight gain, sexual side effects, stomach upset and others). Some of our clients seek out Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Deep TMS) earlier in the treatment process because they are uncomfortable with these more traditional treatment options.

The most common improvements that we see in our clients with PTSD include:
It may be difficult to believe that any treatment can be helpful if you have not found success with other treatment approaches. Please know that you are not alone in these experiences and that these are very common reasons why clients from across Canada and North America seek out Deep TMS treatment at TMS Life in Ottawa for PTSD.

Understanding PTSD

Many of our clients have previously been struggling in private for many years with symptoms of PTSD including emotional dysregulation (anger, sadness, irritability), hypervigilance, muscle tension, nightmares and flashbacks. Symptoms of PTSD are often initially seen as a sign of vulnerability or weakness which can impede individuals reaching out for treatment or support. We feel that it is important to acknowledge that a person can both be incredibly tough and have times in their life in which they are struggling.

The focus of Deep TMS for PTSD is not to relive, speak about or re-experience traumatic experiences. It is focused on re-wiring nervous system networks in our brain to reduce the impact these experiences have on how we approach life now. Essentially, we are flipping a switch in the brain from “survival/unsafe” to “safe/calm”.

What Is Deep TMS?

Deep TMS is a Health Canada-approved treatment for Major Depressive Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) that uses targeted electromagnetic pulses to gently stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. It is commonly used “off-label” for the treatment of PTSD and trauma-related symptoms based on the over-lap in brain networks involved in PTSD, Anxiety disorders, OCD and depression.

Deep TMS is a modern advancement that builds upon earlier versions of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) and it is designed to reach deeper and broader brain regions which research suggests may improve outcomes for individuals living with anxiety.

During treatment sessions, you’ll remain comfortably seated and fully awake. All clients are able to return to their regular activities—including work or driving—immediately afterward.

When to Consider Deep TMS

Deep TMS at TMS Life may be right for your PTSD if you:

Earlier access to neuromodulation treatments like Deep TMS can help reduce the time you spend struggling with anxiety and may improve your long-term outcomes.

What Makes Deep TMS Different

Not all TMS systems are the same. Deep TMS uses a specialized coil design that allows electromagnetic fields to penetrate deeper into the brain and stimulate larger neural networks involved in PTSD including the medial Pre-Frontal Cortex and Anterior Cingulate Cortex regions. These regions are not stimulated properly with other technologies due to their deeper locations in the brain.

Key advantages include:

TMS Safety

TMS Life has developed its own approach to delivering Deep TMS that optimizes safety, tolerance and clinical outcomes. Since our beginning, we have treated clients from age 16 to 76 without any serious adverse outcomes. In addition, all clients have been able to tolerate the treatment and complete their treatment course. The most common side effects are mild and temporary and include mild headache and/or fatigue after sessions.

Unlike antidepressant medications, Deep TMS does not cause systemic side effects such as weight changes, sexual dysfunction, sedation, or digestive issues. This makes it an appealing option for people who have experienced troublesome medication side effects or haven’t found adequate relief from traditional treatments.

TMS Effectiveness for PTSD

In our clinic, 2 out of 3 Clients with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder experience a significant clinical reduction in their symptoms or remission. Due to our accelerated protocols, these changes are often observed within 2 weeks of their acute treatment course.

For those that do not respond to treatment, we continue to explore treatment options and provide guidance for next steps for treatment, which may or may not be available at the clinic. We continue to find success even in the most treatment-resistant cases with our goal to eventually be able to find improvement for all our clients.

Personalized TMS Treatment with qEEG Brain Mapping

We are the only clinic in Canada to use qEEG Brain Mapping to inform Deep TMS protocols for PTSD and trauma-related symptoms. Quantitative Electroencephalogram or qEEG is an investigational and non-invasive brain mapping tool that measures electrical activity across different brain networks and provides us with objective data about how your brain networks are functioning, including patterns commonly associated with PTSD, anxiety, depression and other mental health conditions. qEEG is rapidly advancing the entire field of TMS and our clinic is on the frontier of this exciting advancement in the field.

Benefits of qEEG-guided treatment:
By combining qEEG with Deep TMS, we create a more individualized, evidence-based approach that is especially valuable for complex or treatment-resistant cases.

Frequently Asked Questions About our PTSD Treatments in Ottawa

Can TMS help if I’ve been living with PTSD for many years?
Yes. TMS therapy can be effective for long-term PTSD symptoms. TMS works by stimulating underactive or dysregulated brain networks involved in fear response, emotional regulation, and threat detection. Even long-standing patterns can respond when the brain is supported to form new, healthier neural connections.
TMS is fundamentally different from pharmacological and psychological treatment options, like cognitive behavioural therapy, because it does not rely on discussion or systemic medication effects. Instead, it directly targets the brain circuits associated with PTSD using focused magnetic stimulation. For individuals who find therapy insufficient on its own, or who experience limited benefit or side effects from medications, TMS offers a non-invasive alternative that can provide lasting relief from symptoms.

No. TMS does not require you to recount or relive traumatic experiences. You will never be asked to recount your traumatic experiences in detail. Treatment sessions do not involve trauma exposure or memory recall. Many patients find this reassuring, especially if previous therapies felt emotionally intense or destabilizing.

Absolutely. TMS is commonly used for individuals with service-related or occupational PTSD, including veterans, active service members, and first responders. These forms of PTSD often involve chronic hyperarousal and deeply ingrained stress responses, which TMS is well suited to address through targeted neurostimulation. Military and RCMP Veterans receive full coverage for TMS from Medavie Blue Cross and Veteran Affairs Canada.

Response timelines vary. Some individuals begin noticing subtle improvements, such as better sleep, reduced reactivity, or improved emotional control, within the first few sessions. For others, changes become more noticeable closer to the midpoint or end of treatment. Progress is closely monitored, and protocols may be adjusted to support optimal outcomes.
No referral is required. A comprehensive assessment is completed as part of your intake to determine whether TMS is clinically appropriate for you. If you already have a diagnosis, it will be incorporated into your care plan. If not, the assessment process helps clarify symptoms and treatment suitability.

TMS can be safely used alongside medications and psychotherapy. In fact, many individuals continue their existing care while undergoing TMS. Treatment is coordinated thoughtfully, and collaboration with your healthcare providers can be arranged when appropriate to ensure continuity and safety. Improvement with TMS may facilitate the ability to reduce or discontinue medications for some but not all patients.
