We have used Northern Light Technologies Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) lamps in our clinic for the past two years and confidently recommend them based on their quality, reliability, and effectiveness. These lights are high-quality, made in Canada, and deliver the clinically recommended 10,000 lux of UV-free light at a safe and practical distance of 14–16 inches.
For optimal benefit, we recommend using a SAD lamp for 30 minutes each morning at the manufacturer’s recommended distance. One of the key differences between higher-quality SAD lamps and less expensive alternatives is that these lights reliably emit the appropriate intensity and provide clear guidance on proper usage. Many lower-cost options either do not reach 10,000 lux or would require the user to sit unrealistically close to achieve that intensity.
For individuals prone to seasonal mood changes, we suggest beginning light therapy in September, as natural daylight exposure begins to decrease. This early start helps regulate the circadian rhythm before symptoms emerge.
